Reloading Families of a different Name

Have you ever renamed a family and then wanted to load it back into a project without having to swap out your families of a different name and risk losing tags and dimensions?

Well its possible.

In your project browser (where all your sheets/views are list at the left of screen) scroll down to the families section and expand the list.

Now find the family you want to overwrite.

Right click and select reload.

Now navigate to the family you want to overwrite it with. Amazingly it doesn't need to be the same name or even the same family category

Once reloaded revit will swap out all your families of this type in the project for this new version.

This is good for keeping file sizes down and avoiding excess loaded families.

Hope this helps :)

Comments are welcome as always.

Some handy advice.
On another topic. Would you be able to explain how you made your corner fixed window that is on Revitcity. I can't work out how you made the cut for the window. I'm interested as I would like to make a similar family but with two doors. Thanks

Sure,

Simply delete the opening cut from the standard window template.

You'll need to use the tab key to pick it.

Then create a void extrusion to the shape you require.

Then use the cut geometry tool, pick the void then the wall to tell the void to cut the wall.

This hard codes the void to cut all walls when placed in a project. A standard opening cut will only cut its host. A void can cut multiples.

HTH.

Great tip! (on reloading families of a different name)

That's an awesome tip! Never thought it behaved that way. This will save time as most user's workflow would be to load, select all instances and change the famil and finally delete the old family.
