Revit 2011 - Creating a Parametric Shade Sail using Adaptive Components

In this video I'll demonstrate how something can be easily made very parametric using adaptive components for a tension structure such as a shade sail.

thanks, I needed it

Great tute, thanks. Is it possible to create brackets in the project and then place and constrain the points of the shade sail to those brackets or would the brackets have to be in the shade family?

Hi Spencer,

Yes that's definitely possible. What I showed was a very basic example of the use of the points based templates and adaptive components.

I'd probably do the brackets as a nested family so they are easier to constrain, or place them as separate face based families in the project and then host one of the adaptive points on each of the brackets.

With this approach if you moved the brackets the points would update automatically...

hey i did all this but in a three point model and the video was extremely helpful but i was wondering how to change the color from default. Is that even possible?

Of course Ben,

Just select the form in the family and in the instance properties associate the Material Parameter to a new parameter called "Material" or whatever you fee like. Then you'll have a parameter in the project to modify.

There are a few others ways to control the material but this would be my recommendation.
