Revit Elevation/Section View Depth Clipping workaround

Hello readers,

This is another one of those workarounds that I've been doing for a while and wasn't aware that a lot of people didn't know of it. Its a very quick method to creating depth in your elevations/sections without adding masses, using the linework tool, or utilising shadows. (although in Revit 2010, with directx turned on printing of views with shadows has improved exponentially!).

This is my first attempt at uploading a video so please let me know if people have any difficulties viewing. It has been encoded using the Techsmith codec. TSCC in AVI format.

Not a bad job for your 1st run... couple of suggestions. Invest in a good mic and don't have other background noise (definately not music) Otherwise GREAT JOB

Very useful tip, thanks.

Hi Jason & Robert, in this case I do have a good mic. I just spoke softly to avoid strange looks from my colleagues... The background music is our office music, which is very open plan.

That said, I'll try to find quiet times to compile these, but in our office that can sometimes be difficult! I usually have to squeeze it in or I won't have time to make a post at all...

Cheers

I do the same only I select the elements in the view with a crossing window (right to left) and instead of halftone which still has thick lines I use a thin, grey pin for projection lines and turn off surface patterns. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

Great tip thank you!

Thanks Chris,
Great little clip, it was good to see a quick way of grabbing elements by using the orientate to view in 3d.
Cheers,

Ian

Hi Chris,

Forget my last post, it is working fine now.

Thanks for the video, it was great as usual, was looking at you breakwatr project, which is awsome, what is the best way about learing how to use the API, where should one start?

If you are familiar with programming you could probably just get the SDK and accompanying documentation and start playing. Otherwise I definitely would recommend watching some AU Online vids or doing some training on it specifically...

i am doing this and it works while I am in 3d section but if i go to the actual section its not there? have i done something wrong? Using revit 12

Hi Lou,

Whilst you select the elements in 3D, you then switch to the section/elevation that you want to half tone elements in (with everything still selected), and do the override graphics in view in the elevation/section. Sounds like you are applying the graphic override in the 3D view...
